Congeners are chemicals that exert an effect on the body or brain. They are often contained in alcoholic beverages along with ethanol, the key biologically active ingredient of alcohol. They are a product of the fermentation or aging process when organic chemicals in the beverage break down. They may also be added during production to contribute to the beverage's taste, smell, and appearance.

Congeners are present mostly in dark liquors like:

2. EAT FOODS HIGH IN ELECTROLYTES

Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals and compounds that help your body do much of its work. Producing energy and contracting your muscles are just two examples. Some of the most common electrolytes are Sodium, chloride, potassium, and calcium. We get them from what we eat and drink.

Eating foods that are high in electrolytes while you are drinking is another way to stave off a hangover. Let's take a look at some foods that are high in electrolytes:

5. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

If you have to get up early the next morning, you may want to choose another night to spend out on the town. Research shows that alcohol is known to interfere with the quality and length of your sleep. To avoid undue misery, make sure that you can hit the snooze button in the morning.

You'll need some extra hours to sleep off the effects of a night of drinking, so be sure to plan ahead.
